In the mountains of New Mexico, the bull Elk is king. The Chama River Valley is prime habitat for this largest member of the deer family and the Chama watershed has one of the healthiest Elk herds in New Mexico. At sunrise and sunset vast herds of these magnificent creatures fill the meadows – often on your own property.
Trophy Mule Deer abound, with excellent hunting within minutes of town. And in the spring, hunting the elusive Merriam turkey is a great way to celebrate the return of warm weather.
There’s good hunting in public wildlife areas bordering the Village of Chama. Farther afield, the National Forests offer excellent hunting too. But nothing beats hunting on your own property.
In the hills and mountains outside of Chama, you can buy a home, cabin or other property and obtain a Unit 4 Elk permit. As a landowner, the New Mexico division of wildlife will assist you in filing the required paperwork, which eliminates the risk of permit drawings.
