While most people think of New Mexico as a dry, semi-arid climate, the Chama River Valley is actually one of the primary watersheds for all of New Mexico. Everywhere you turn there is water. And in the mountains, water means fishing for feisty trout – often on your own property.
Good fishing starts in the Village of Chama. Here you can buy a home, cabin or other property with fishing access on the Chama River. Downstream you’ll find fishing properties on the Chama as well as up the feeder creeks like Willow, the Chamita or the Canones. If you enjoy fishing freestone mountain streams, the Brazos offers fishing properties with easy access to excellent fly-fishing waters.
From the Brazos to El Vado Lake, the Chama River is a bigger river, offering challenging fishing for huge brown trout and rainbows. For lakefront property featuring fishing for lake trout up to 30 pounds and plentiful kokanee salmon, consider property in one of the mountain communities near Heron Lake. Heron Lake offers year round fishing, plus breathtaking views.
Even warm-water fishing enthusiasts can find property to suit their passion in the Chama River Valley. Abiquiu Lake, near the picturesque artist community of Abiquiu, has lakefront properties with great fishing for smallmouth bass, walleye and other popular game fish.
